More Taiwan firms step up development for large-size touchscreen ICs

More Taiwan-based IC design houses have stepped up development of touchscreen controller ICs for large-size applications such as all-in-one (AIO) computers, and touch-enabled monitors and displays for advertising, educational and industrial purposes.

Egalax-empia Technology (EETI) and Weida Hitech are already shipping in volume touchscreen controllers for AIO PCs, while Elan with its complete capacitive touch-panel solutions has obtained orders for large-size applications from China and Taiwan, according to industry sources.

Inputek and UltraChip have also expanded their offerings to include those for large-size applications and expect the new business to bear fruit in 2016, the sources said.

Gross margin generated from large-size touchscreen controller orders has hovered at around 40%, while that from orders for mass-market applications such as smartphones and tablets has already fallen below 30%, the sources noted. To maintain profitability, touchscreen IC specialists are putting increased focus on the large-size market segment.
